Swinburne FC Match Wrap: Late-Season Push Heats Up Across the Club

Nathan Gorga

As we head into the final stretch of the 2025 season, there’s been no shortage of drama, grit and standout moments across all three of our teams. From thrilling finishes under Friday night lights to a top-of-the-table shakeup, here’s a look at how our Swinburne FC squads have been tracking over the last few rounds.

Thirds – Metro 9 SE

While the win column has been elusive, the Thirds have shown real heart and attacking intent in recent weeks. A gritty 3-3 draw against Maidstone under the Friday night lights in Round 12 was a highlight, as the team continues to build chemistry and belief.

Round 13 delivered both brilliance and heartbreak – a delightful chipped finish from left-wing wizard Alex Revill and a well-constructed team goal converted by Darcy Nelson had the boys in the contest right to the end. Unfortunately, Footscray stole it with the final kick in a crushing 2-3 loss, but the performance left nothing to be questioned in terms of effort and approach.

A tough 9-0 loss to Dandenong in Round 14 was a sobering setback, but the group is determined to respond with resilience in their next outing away at Old Trinity in Catch Up Round 2.

Reserves – Metro 6 SE

The Reserves have been on a rollercoaster of late – but one that’s climbing at the right time. After a 6-0 demolition of Ashburton in Round 10, a pair of frustrating draws against Brighton and Old Scotch allowed Monash to leapfrog into first place heading into Round 13.

That set the stage for a massive top-of-the-table clash against Monash at Howard Dawson Reserve – and our boys delivered. A moment of class saw Sam Young finish off a superb team move for a crucial 1-0 win, reclaiming top spot.

They followed it up with a professional 2-0 away win at Middle Park in Round 14, putting them 2 points clear on top with three rounds to play. All eyes are on the Reserves as they make their final push for the title.

Seniors – Metro 2 SE

It’s been a testing run of results for the Seniors, but there are promising signs of growth as the season winds down. A mid-season recruit has added spark – Yushi Toshiyama, who began his Swinburne FC journey in the Thirds, has rapidly risen through the ranks and now made himself at home in the firsts, bagging 2 goals in his last 3 matches.

Meanwhile, Alex-Boni Finch found his scoring boots in Round 13, netting twice in a valiant comeback attempt against Old Xavier, which ended in a narrow 3-4 defeat.

With four matches remaining, the Seniors are eyeing a strong finish from their current mid-table position. Coach Joel Kleber continues to push the group to finish on a high and lay the foundations for an even stronger 2026 campaign.

With just a few rounds left across the divisions, the hunger remains strong throughout the club. Whether it’s chasing silverware or building momentum for next season, Swinburne FC is giving it everything in the run home.
